Iterative Refinement for Linear Programming
نویسندگان
چکیده
We describe an iterative refinement procedure for computing extended precision or exact solutions to linear programming problems (LPs). Arbitrarily precise solutions can be computed by solving a sequence of closely related LPs with limited precision arithmetic. The LPs solved share the same constraint matrix as the original problem instance and are transformed only by modification of the objective function, righthand side, and variable bounds. Exact computation is used to compute and store the exact representation of the transformed problems, while numeric computation is used for solving LPs. At all steps of the algorithm the LP bases encountered in the transformed problems correspond directly to LP bases in the original problem description. We show that this algorithm is effective in practice for computing extended precision solutions and that it leads to a direct improvement of the best known methods for solving LPs exactly over the rational numbers. Our implementation is publically available as an extension of the academic LP solver SoPlex.

A numerical study of iterative refinement schemes for weakly singular integral equations
Three iterative refinement schemes are studied for approximating the solutions of linear weakly singular Fredholm integral equations of the second kind. The rates of convergence and computational costs of the three schemes are studied and compared with the classical approach by applying them respectively to: (i) a sparse linear system associated with an integral equation modelling a real life A...
متن کاملAn iterative method for tri-level quadratic fractional programming problems using fuzzy goal programming approach
Tri-level optimization problems are optimization problems with three nested hierarchical structures, where in most cases conflicting objectives are set at each level of hierarchy. Such problems are common in management, engineering designs and in decision making situations in general, and are known to be strongly NP-hard. Existing solution methods lack universality in solving these types of pro...
متن کاملTR-2011002: Symbolic Lifting for Structured Linear Systems of Equations: Numerical Initialization, Nearly Optimal Boolean Cost, Variations, and Extensions
Hensel’s symbolic lifting for a linear system of equations and numerical iterative refinement of its solution have striking similarity. Combining the power of lifting and refinement seems to be a natural resource for further advances, but turns out to be hard to exploit. In this paper, however, we employ iterative refinement to initialize lifting. In the case of Toeplitz, Hankel, and other popu...

متن کاملIterative refinement for linear systems and LAPACK
The technique of iterative refinement for improving the computed solution to a linear system was used on desk calculators and computers in the 1940s and has remained popular. In the 1990s iterative refinement is well, supported in software libraries, notably in LAPACK. Although the behaviour of iterative refinement in floating point arithmetic is reasonably well understood, the existing theory i...
